The electric resistivity of metals depends on the temperature. If the temperature-resistivity-relationship of a material is well-known, it can be used for a resistance thermometer. Platinum resistors exhibit superior properties and are therefore used widely for this purpose. The temperature is then calculated from the measured resistance.
