PAH 5000 excites polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and oil in water with UV light. These substances reacts by emitting fluorescence light, which is then detected by the probe. This measurement principle is significantly more sensitive than other common methods such as infrared scattering.

The measuring window carries an anti-fouling coating.
